Ladbrokes has stopped banking on BBC show the Great British Bake Off after a flurry of wagers sparked worries the yohaig code winner's name may have been leaked.

"A run of bets" was positioned for one participant, numerous at stores in the Ipswich location, the bookmaker said.

It is not understood which baker triggered the flurry or whether any entrants have connections with the yohaig code Suffolk town.

The bookmaker said a flurry of bets came in for among the 12 candidates whose odds started at 12/1 and were minimized to 6/1, 3/1 and then evens.

"We used prices on Monday and, nearly before the ink was dry, an unusual number of punters remained in a rush to back just one contestant," David Williams of Ladbrokes said.

"On Tuesday and Wednesday it was more of the very same one-way traffic. That sufficed to set our alarm bells sounding and, as a safety measure, we suspended our wagering.

Several of the bets positioned were the maximum the bookie would consider wagers made on the program's outcome, and 90% were put on one candidate.

The suspension would not affect bets already placed, the business said.
